Once your permanent teeth are grown in, there may be some instances where a tooth (or teeth) may need to be extracted. These cases need to be properly diagnosed by our dentists—any and all alternatives should be discussed when considering tooth extraction. Reasons for tooth extraction may vary. Dr. Sweeney and Dr. Utterback may recommend tooth extraction in Virginia Beach, Virginia, for one of the following reasons:
- Preparation for orthodontic or cosmetic treatment
- Infection or risk of infection
- Advanced periodontal disease
- Advanced decay
- A mouth too crowded for new teeth to grow in
Many tooth extractions are simple, but when a tooth becomes impacted, oral surgery may be needed. A tooth becomes impacted when there is not room for it to erupt through the gums. Instead, it becomes trapped between the jawbone and gum tissue. If not removed, impacted teeth can cause damage to nearby teeth, gums, and bone. Swelling, pain, and infection in the gums may also occur. In most cases, wisdom teeth need to be surgically removed because most people do not have room for them in their mouth.
