Hello, and welcome to Sweeney Utterback Dentistry Care in Virginia Beach, VA.  If you’re like most of the American public, it’s been years since you have taken that first step to seek out dental care due to  lack of insurance, fees, trust, embarrassment, or plain old fear. I’d like to address these things to help relieve some of your anxiety, and hopefully, encourage you to give us a call to help with your dental needs.

Insurance and costs- Unless you have an HMO (you will have a specific name of a dental provider on your card), we file with all insurance companies and accept assignment (you don’t have to pay us in full and get reimbursed…just your co-pay). When you make your initial appointment with our practice, we contact your insurance provider and get a complete breakdown of your policy. By doing so, we will know (as will you) up front what your insurance benefits are without all the guess work. If you don’t have insurance, we offer an initial new patient appointment for $149.00 This appointment includes everything  we  will need to provide you with the information to get you on the road to optimum dental health. The visit includes your office visit, a full dental examination, periodontal (gum) examination, oral cancer screening, a full series of dental x-rays, photographs (if necessary), treatment planning, and consultation.

Unfortunately, all dental plans cover only a percentage of treatment and have an annual maximum they will pay. People who don’t have insurance feel that by NOT having it, they can’t afford to have treatment.  The truth is, the longer you wait, the more costly treatment becomes. Tooth decay and gum disease doesn’t go away on it’s own. If you’re waiting for something to hurt to make an appointment, you could have nerve involvement since that it typically where the pain is coming from.  It’s much less expensive to have 2 or 3 cleanings a year and pay out of pocket than it is to wait 5 or 6 years until you obtain dental insurance, only to find you now have gum disease and your policy only covers a portion of the treatment. In either case, as the saying goes “where there’s a will there’s a way”.  Once we determine what treatment you need, we can “phase” your care. We have many patients on 3, 4 or 5 year plans. No matter what the situation, we will work very closely to help you get the treatment you need and deserve.

I’ve had many patients tell me stories of former dental visits they have gone to and had treatment performed without knowing how much it was going to be in advance, then expected to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars that day! This will not happen in our practice. We have a policy in place to assure no treatment is done without prior patient acceptance and arrangements made in advance.

After your New Patient Examination, you will be scheduled for an ROF (Review of Findings) appointment. There is no charge for this confidential visit. During this time, we will review all the information  gathered during your exam.  A treatment plan will be presented along with options, if possible. Reasons for all prescribed treatment will be explained as well as descriptions of the procedures if the patient would like. Your insurance benefits will be explained as will your co-payments for each procedure. We will get as detailed as you want, or less if you prefer. We will discuss any anxiety issues you may experience and prescribe medication if necessary. All payment arrangements and/or financing, will be made so there is never a question as to what the patient’s responsibility will be. If necessary, we can plan your treatment in phases, allowing for insurance benefit years to roll over to maximize your annual allowance to 2 or more years. We schedule 90 minutes for this appointment and use as much time as necessary to answer all questions.

If you find yourself in an emergency situation and need to see a dentist prior to making your “New Patient Appointment”, under most circumstances we can see you the same day you call. Dental pain is not to be ignored. Even if it goes away for a while, I assure you it will come back, and the next time it will most likely be worse. Call our office as soon as you’re experiencing discomfort. We will help determine if you need to be seen for an emergency visit or if we can schedule the complete exam.

There is NEVER a reason to be embarrassed by the condition of your teeth in this practice. The fact you made the step to call is very commendable. We understand how difficult this is for so many people.  We want to help, and I assure you the staff and Dr’s at ADC  will do everything they can to make you comfortable and leave you feeling like a member of our “family”.

Dental Fear– Whether you’re just a little nervous, or had such a previously bad experience that the thought of walking into a dental office makes you break out into a sweat, it’s a real fear that we recognize and take very seriously.  The reason makes no difference. We will work with you and do everything we can to manage it, and hopefully one day, help you recover from.  We offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas), and other techniques to make your visits comfortable and painless.

Thank you for visiting our site. If you have any questions, feel free to call the office at 757.222.3737. We’ll be happy to help in any way we can. Mention this Blog during your ROF appointment and recieve $100 off any dental service presented in your treatment plan!
